With the Spring and Summer coming up, people and pets will be spending more time outdoors. Unfortunately, this can mean that smells are tracked in. I know with a man and two boys in my home, the air doesn’t always smell the most pleasant!
There is the not so nice aroma of sweat. The lingering odor of barbecue brought in from the grill. Even the occasional poop from the baby (or on someone’s shoe, if they’ve tracked it in from the dog doing his business!).
5 Tips to an Odor-Free Home
With the increase in outdoor time comes the need for simple tips and tricks to keep your home odor-free. There’s nothing worse than inviting guests over to a rancid home. Read on to find out how I battle the unpleasant scents and keep our house smelling fresh and clean!
1. A window’s breeze can work wonders.
Once the smell has made it into your house, it doesn’t hurt trying to get it back out. Sometimes opening a window can do the trick, especially if it’s the least bit windy. The breeze can flow in and allow the odors to filter out of the house. I love leaving the windows open while I clean so the smell of the products I use doesn’t get too heavy for my kiddos.
2. Vacuuming and deodorizer go hand-in-hand.
Carpet deodorizer works wonders for dirt and pet-related smells. There are some that formulated specifically for your needs, so be sure to check the labels before purchasing. Use it every time you vacuum your floors for maximum effect. Our home would always smell like a golden retriever if I didn’t use this!
Kids tend to toss their clothing where they take it off – my 3 year old is notorious for this, so directing them straight to the laundry room will help keep the odors at bay. At the least, it will condense the scents to a single room – and one that isn’t typically frequented by guests.
4. Combat odors with Filtrete Odor Reduction Air Filters.
Even your air filters can help you keep a nice, odor-free home. A Filtrete Odor Reduction Filter is 65 times more effective than other carbon filters at removing odors from the entire home, such as those from cooking, tobacco smoke, pets, mildew and cleaning chemicals. Take out more than just unpleasant outdoor odors with this bad boy!
Filtrete also offers odor reduction solutions right on their website. Be sure to check there if you need more ideas.
5. Nice smelling candles are your friend.
If you need to quickly mask an odor, light a few candles throughout your home. I love to crank up my wickless candle warmer when I start noticing even a hint of unpleasant air. Try to limit the various candles to 1-2 scents. Doing a mixture of several can create a stink that’s worse than the smells you are trying to cover up!
