If you’ve visited my blog before, you are probably noticing this isn’t the Southern Girl Ramblings you are used to. Nope, we are now Momerish – a fun play on the word “gibberish” which I think suits parenthood just fine. It’s a crazy world, one that doesn’t always make sense!
This change was a long time coming. I’ve wanted to have a new name for my blog for over a year. I finally bit the bullet and bought a new domain name, hired a blog designer, and got ready for big changes to happen.
And I’m 110% happy that I did it!
4 Reasons I Revamped My Blog
1. Life Changes
A lot has changed in my life since I began blogging on Southern Girl Ramblings in 2009. I’ve had two kids. I’ve gotten much more serious with my blog, now viewing it as a major income source and part of my online business. Gone are the days of me rambling about what I did or ate…now I’m striving to create a great resource for moms here.
2. Fresh Start
Blogger burnout is a real thing, and sometimes you really need to shake up your stuff in order to regain the love you once had. For me, changing the name and look of Southern Girl Ramblings is all about being proud of the blog I have built. I need a more professional look, and one that inspires me to create quality content for my readers week after week.
3. Mom-Centric Blog
I will admit…I wanted to official become a mommy blogger. Many don’t like that term, but I think it suits me just fine. I am a mom, and I blog! Since I have my two boys, I craved a parenting blog that reflected that from the moment a visitor lands on the homepage.
4. Shorter, Catchier Domain Name
I’ve always felt that Southern Girl Ramblings was too long of a name for a blog. It wasn’t a big deal when I first started blogging, but getting the whole name on a social networking site is difficult. I mean, that’s 21 characters – little room for much else in a tweet…
How I Revamped My Blog
Moving to a new domain name wasn’t as difficult as it sounds. It did take a lot of time, very carefully following directions and then finding other solutions for small bugs and errors.
But basically, this is the order that I took…
- Racked my brain for the perfect domain name
- Bought the domain
- Hired Pixel Me Designs for my blog design
- Learned all I could about moving a WordPress blog from one site to another
- Spent four hours with my husband the night before the design install, moving the blog
- Waited patiently for the design to be installed and go live!
With so many blogs out there, most of the common “mom” domain names are taken. Even if they aren’t used for a blog, they are registered and parked for whatever reason. It took a good 6 months for me to come up with Momerish.
I had a short list of other ideas, but I wanted 1-2 words, something easy to remember, short, and catchy. I wasn’t really looking to play on a word at the time. I must have went through 1,000 versions of Mom/Mommy/Mama + [insert random word].
I’m not 100% sure how Momerish came to me now. I was thinking of words that describe average, less than perfect — because let’s face it, this mom ain’t no Pinterest Perfect Mama! Somehow “gibberish” popped in my head, or maybe I saw it on a random synonym list…but I decided to do a play on the word to describe parenting, and here we are!
