So Monday morning, I got ready for the induction on about 3 hours of sleep. I was way to0 nervous and excited to rest very much. We arrived at the hospital around 6:15am. I sat in the waiting room for what seemed like the longest hour of my life while waiting to be checked in. I was finally in a Labor and Delivery room by about 7:30am. Since I was Group B Strep Positive, I found out that I would not be allowed to walk, use the Jacuzzi tub, or even leave my room. I had to continuously stay on the monitors to make sure Sawyer was safe. That was only the first kink in my birth plan.
My nurse started my first dosage of Pitocin and Penicillin (for the GBS) at 8am. At 8:30am, my doctor came in and found that I was still 2cm dilated and about 80% effaced. My mom, sister, and aunt arrived around 9am, and we played cards and watched TV for a while. At 12:30pm, my doctor came in and checked my cervix again, and I was only at a 3. I was a little worried at this point, as it seemed to be taking forever for me to dilate. The nurse increased my Pitocin at that same time. I called the nurse back in around 1:30pm to see if I could change positions in the bed, as my monitors had to be moved in order to still hear him when I moved.
As soon as the nurse left, I felt the first strong contraction. It was really sharp, making me hot, sweaty, and nauseous. James was at my back, rubbing the lower part of it to help the contractions. It wasn’t long before they were coming about 1 minute apart. By 2:30pm, I had dilated to 7cm. I began begging for an epidural, as I felt that the pain was going to make me throw up, which would only make things worse.
The nurse ordered the epidural, and the anesthesiologist was in the room around 3pm. As she was asking me questions, I felt the need to push. I told the nurse, who checked my cervix and told me it was too late for an epidural as I was completely dilated. I lay down and the nurse called my OB and began to get things ready for delivery. After just 20 minutes of pushing, Sawyer was born at 3:22pm. He was quickly whisked away to be measured and for the first tests. I didn’t care for this as I wanted to get skin to skin and breastfeed him the moment he came out. I didn’t get to hold him until about 30 minutes later. He weighed 8 lbs even, and was 21 inches long.
And here is a photo of the cute little monkey 🙂
