During the warm months of summer, it’s easy to spend time outdoors, swimming, hiking, or doing other sorts of fun activities with the family. As Fall draws near, it’s time to begin thinking about how you can still keep your family up and moving.
With the weather turning cooler, it can be easy to want to stay inside, nestled under a warm blanket, a movie on the television or a computer in your lap. However, it’s usually much more fun to find something the entire family can enjoy participating in – take a little inspiration from Together Counts.
Together Counts is a nationwide program that hopes to inspire active and healthy living. Its primary principle is “Energy Balance” or the balancing of calories we take in versus the calories we burn through activity. This coalition is the first of its kind, bringing together over 200 retailers, food and beverage manufacturers, restaurants, sporting goods and insurance companies, trade associations and non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and professional sports organizations. The purpose is to get more families involved with eating meals and being active together.
For my family, we have fun in a number of ways during the fall season. For example, we visit a local pumpkin farm each year. We go on a hayride, choose a few pumpkins, and enjoy a picnic lunch. Other days, we simply enjoy the park – taking the kiddo’s tricycle or a ball to keep us entertained while we run around. Evening walks around our neighborhood are also fun, especially when we can check out the beautiful colors of the leaves before they fall.
Fall foods are also fun to consume, as there are more pumpkin dishes made at this time than any other in the year. I love pumpkin, so it works great for me! I think we are going to try roasting the pumpkin seeds after we carve our jack-0-lantern for Halloween – that could be a fun (and tasty!) experience.
